Introduction to the Hobbyist Miner Channel’s Big Build Week

On the Hobbyist Miner Channel, we are currently in the middle of an exciting ‘build week’, focusing on an ASIC mining shed upgrade. Our primary objectives for this week include upgrading to our 400-amp commercial service and transitioning all of our ASICs to an inline fan shroud system. Venturing into this project, we thought it would be a fantastic idea to record a video to share our experience and knowledge with other home miners interested in carrying out such a project.

Our Collaboration with Alter Tech

We collaborated with the team over at Alter Tech for this project. I had been shopping for the newest generation Bitcoin miners, and Alter Tech had just what I was looking for—the Bitmain Antminer S19 K Pro, a 120 terahash Bitcoin ASIC Miner. The checkout process was smooth, and in just three days, I received my new Bitmain box.

Following this, I ordered and received a range of mining accessories from their store. These include the Epic UMC control board and five Alter Tech 30 amp, 240-volt L6 30P PDUs. The convenience and quality of products from Alter Tech make them a recommended store for any aspiring miner.

Background: Challenges in Mining and Solving Them

As a home miner, you must tackle three primary challenges: Electrical requirements, sound and heat. The inline shroud system setup that we are implementing aims to address two of these issues — the noise produced by the high RPM fans and the heat.

Addressing the Sound Issue

We will handle the sound issue by removing the high RPM fans and replacing them with an AC Infinity inline fan. The fan’s large size considerably reduces the noise compared to traditional smaller fans.

Addressing the Heat Issue

The heat issue requires a smart and effective solution, thus the decision to introduce the shroud system. By housing all the components within a shroud system, we can direct the heat produced to exit the premises effectively, whether it be a house, garage, shed or any “makeshift setup” miners may be operating in.

Equipment and Setup Process

The equipment powering our solution comes from Fruition Design, who have built shroud kits specifically tailored to contain the heat from ASIC miners effectively. These kits go over the front of the ASIC, channel into the power supply for cooling and also handle the heat from the front of the ASIC.

The team also provided large scale AC Infinity inline fans that are ducted right into the front of the shroud, enabling them to function seamlessly. Apart from cooling, these fans work in unison with the shroud kits to control the noise levels as well.

Future Plans

Our next goal is to power the setup with the robust C13 to C14 cables. We will also use 3ft cables and plug each of our devices directly into the PDUs sponsored by Alter Tech. This deployment will allow us to run two full-size ASICs per PDU.

Clever partnerships have also facilitated the use of pivotal pleb boards, which effectively trick the ASIC into not realizing its stock fans have been replaced, allowing the ASIC to control the speed of the inline fan and maintain ideal operating temperatures.

Conclusion

This progress marks only the beginning of our large-scale setup, with 19 ASICs yet to undergo this upgrade. We cannot emphasize enough the value and effectiveness of the fan shroud system setup, as sound and heat management are critical components to successful mining. Collaborating with Alter Tech and Fruition Design has brought us closer to an ideal setup that meets our needs as hobbyist miners best. We understand the quest for conducive mining environments can be challenging, and we are happy to share an approach that’s working for us. Stay tuned as we continue our journey with more upgrades and improvements.

  1. A whole 800cfm… That is such a waste. Been there done that. And at $300 persetup…. Better off just moving a ton of ambient air in and out of the space. If your worried about noise then asics are not for you.

  2. I ordered my Fruition Designs shroud this afternoon….I also got the Pivotal Pleb Njord Cloudline control board. And I used thehobbyistminer at checkout to save about $34 bucks at check out! Heck yeah dude! 👍💪

  3. So I tried to reach out to blackops since you recommended them but they don't host ice river miners. Maybw that's something you should bring up to them because that's very disappointing and now I have to shop elsewhere to host my miners. Keep up the great work tho on the videos! Love the content

  4. Great video….this is the same set up I'm going to use on my S19K Pro out in my shop. Great info on the Pivetol Pleb board so the ASIC controls the inline fan. Keep the vids comin brother! Can Braiins be installed on this board?

  5. This is a massive waste of money. At over $300 per ASIC, that money would be better spent for someone like you that's building and setting up a shed specifically for mining, to actually design and build a shed with better air flow characteristics, adding proper fans and equipment to the shed. 10 ASIC's alone with this setup is over $3K, and that could be spent on 2 to 3 high volume industrial fans, vents, and building materials, to give you all the air flow you'd ever need, and those 10 ASIC's wouldn't even consume half the 400 amp service, so we know double that amount of equipment is going in that shed.

  6. Run Braiins OS, my S19k Pro 115 does up to 160Th/s with braiins. With a Civitek ctrl board you need the farm monitor running (on a Raspi ie), its free and needed, otherwise the miner boots into stock firmware. Runs fine for months now, using only excess solar power, thats why I need to change the power a few times a day with braiins. Got a cheap <$70 inline fan, it only does 860 m3/h, thats not enough to run >3800W on warmer days, get one with >1200m3/h min. 3d printed the adapters by myself. A duct silencer (3ft long) is $50 over here and reduces noise ratio.

  7. You should also give the water cooling kit from Zeus mining a try (Not a sponsor). It seems to be comparable in price when you add up all the part for the air cooling setup.
