Introduction

In the increasingly popular world of cryptocurrency mining, there are numerous ways to harness the power of technology and electricity to gain profit. One of these options is the Bitmain Antminer L3++, which specializes in mining Dogecoin and Litecoin using the Scrypt algorithm. This powerful machine, while efficient, tends to produce a massive amount of noise and heat. This can make for an unpleasant experience when using multiple Antminers in a cramped space, such as a crypto mining shed. A fellow YouTuber, Rabid Mining, offers a solution to this problem by replacing the standard fans with Noctua NF-F12s, which boast lower noise output and a maximum speed of 3000 RPM, as opposed to the stock fans’ 6000 RPM. In the following article, we’ll explore the benefits of making the switch, as well as the potential drawbacks and whether or not it’s worth it.

Performance Overview

Bitmain Antminer L3++

The Bitmain Antminer L3++ is a powerful and efficient cryptocurrency miner, specifically designed to mine Litecoin and Dogecoin. The unit is equipped with powerful 6,000 RPM fans that effectively dissipate heat, allowing for continuous mining operation. However, the downside to these fans is that they produce an enormous amount of noise, which can become a nuisance when using multiple units in a confined space.

Noctua NF-F12 Fans

Noctua’s NF-F12 fans are known for their high performance and exceptionally low noise output, making them an ideal candidate for replacing the stock fans in an Antminer L3++. These fans are capable of reaching speeds of up to 3,000 RPM, providing ample airflow and cooling capabilities for most computing applications. As such, these fans should, in theory, be capable of maintaining adequate temperatures for the L3++ while operating at a much quieter level.

Testing Setup

We will be testing the performance of the Noctua NF-F12 fans in comparison to the stock fans on the Antminer L3++. Our tests will focus on three primary factors: noise output, temperature control, and overall mining performance.

For consistency, we will be conducting all tests inside a crypto mining shed. Our test environment will consist of a single Antminer L3++ and one Noctua NF-F12 fan, and we will repeat the tests multiple times with the stock and Noctua fans to ensure accurate results.

Analysis and Results

Noise Output

As expected, the Noctua NF-F12 fans did indeed produce significantly less noise than the stock fans when operating at their maximum speed. This makes for a much more pleasant experience when using the Antminer L3++ inside the confined space of a crypto mining shed.

The reduced noise output alone may be enough for some miners to justify making the switch, but those who are more concerned with maximizing their mining efficiency should consider the other factors as well.

Temperature Control

Despite operating at only half the RPM of the stock fans, the Noctua NF-F12 fans were surprisingly effective at maintaining the temperature of the Antminer L3++. Our tests showed only a minimal increase in the temperature when using the Noctua fans compared to the stock fans. This is an impressive feat considering the significant reduction in noise output.

Mining Performance

Although the Noctua fans managed to maintain a relatively stable temperature during our tests, there was a noticeable impact on the overall mining performance. When using the Noctua NF-F12 fans, the Antminer L3++ produced a slightly lower hashrate compared to when using the stock fans. This is likely due to the lower RPM and reduced airflow from the Noctua fans.

While the reduction in hashrate was not extreme, it could have an impact on mining profitability over an extended period, especially when operating multiple Antminer L3++ units.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Noctua NF-F12 fans do an impressive job of reducing noise output while still maintaining acceptable temperature control when used in a Bitmain Antminer L3++. However, the trade-off in mining performance may be a concern for some miners.

For users who prioritize a quieter environment and are willing to sacrifice a slight dip in mining performance, the Noctua NF-F12 fans are an attractive option. However, for those who are more concerned with maximizing their mining profitability, the stock fans may still be the best option, despite the increased noise output. Ultimately, it will be up to individual miners to weigh the importance of each factor and decide which fan configuration works best for their specific situation.

  1. THM man that is awesome I recently purchased two L3’s for a friend and did the same fan mod for him, he will be using them this winter to heat up his basement! So cool to see more mods like this, just note in the summer the miner will run hotter keeping the heatsink clean will be very important in the summer.

  2. Big issue I've had with doing this and running for several months. If the miner crashes with certain errors, it will dump the fan settings and you have to log in to the Asics and manually set the speed back up to 3100 rpm. Or else it will just constantly overheat and reboot.

  3. im doing this myself today. did you go with the trend and put noctura's on? Im going with something quieter and more CFM. ill let you know the results after i do the swap this evening.
